Handcrafted illustrated objects, crossing oceans
to connect tradition and imagination.

Handcrafted illustrated objects, crossing oceans to connect tradition and imagination.

Reviving the spirit of the eponymous historic trading post in Nagasaki Bay, the only gateway between Japan and the West from the 17th through the 19th century, Dejima Company continues a legacy of cultural exchange.

Each collection is born from a dialogue between the time-honoured skills of local artisans and the unbounded curiosity of a new generation of international artists.

Each piece follows the path once traced by the merchant ships of the Edo era — from workshops in Japan to stores across the world — connecting makers and collectors through the language of objects.

Philosophy

Dejima Company draws from the Arts & Crafts movement, celebrating the creative collaboration between artisan and artist. We seek the trace of human gesture in every object, creating pieces not for display alone, but to enrich daily life with beauty and meaning.

Several times a year, we invite illustrators to meet craftspeople in their ateliers and explore the landscapes that shape their practice. These encounters foster mutual learning — and collections that could not exist any other way.

Savoir-faire

Dejima Company collaborates with workshops across Japan and Taiwan, each chosen for their mastery and the dedication with which they keep ancestral techniques alive. Some of them have become central to our journey.

A few miles from Nagasaki lies Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, where our founding partner Kihara brings a centuries-old heritage and meticulous care to every ceramic piece we create.

Further north, we work with Sakurai Kokeshiten, a family-run atelier keeping alive the art of hand-carved and painted wooden figures in the mountains of Tōhoku — a craft as rare as it is precious.
